Kathmandu, August 10. Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Sovita Gautam has said that keeping a language alive means preserving and advancing civilization, culture and the knowledge of ancestors.
Speaking at the inaugural session of the 3rd International Mother Language Journalism Conference–2026, organized by the Federation of Nepalese Indigenous Nationalities Journalists (FoNIJ) in Kathmandu on Monday under the theme “Mother Language Journalism: Language Preservation, Cultural Rights and Sustainable Development,” Minister Gautam made the remarks.
Minister Gautam said that simply having a language within a community does not ensure its survival. If a language is not used in everyday communication and practice, it gradually disappears.
She said, “Some languages may exist within our communities, but if we do not bring those languages into use, they will not remain alive. Keeping a language alive also means advancing our civilization, culture and the knowledge of our ancestors.”
Minister Gautam emphasized that all state information should reach citizens in every part of the country. She said the state has been making efforts from its side to ensure wider access to information.
She said, “If we go to every corner of Nepal and ask our sisters whether they have received all the information from the state, we can still find gaps in access to information. The state has the responsibility to work toward reducing this gap, but the greatest responsibility for bridging this distance lies on the shoulders of you journalists.”
Minister Gautam urged mother-language journalists not to feel that they are being neglected, suppressed or sidelined. She said all concerned sides should reflect on the reasons behind such feelings, conduct self-criticism and move forward toward improvement.
She said, “You have played an important role in bringing people who are away from access to information into the mainstream by providing them with information. We must express our gratitude to you for this contribution.”
Minister Gautam also said that if mother-language journalists feel they have been suppressed or neglected, everyone should examine why such a situation has arisen.
She said, “If you feel that you have been suppressed or neglected, we need to ask who or what has caused that situation. Everyone must engage in self-reflection and move forward on the path of improvement.”
Participants at the conference emphasized that mother-language journalism has an important role in language preservation, cultural rights and sustainable development.

नेपाल आदिवासी जनजाति पत्रकार महासंघ (फोनिज) के सोमबार काठमाडौँमे ‘मातृभाषा पत्रकारिता : भाषा संरक्षण, सांस्कृतिक अधिकार आ दिगो विकास’ नारा साथ आयोजना केने तेसर अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय मातृभाषा पत्रकारिता सम्मेलन–२०२६ के उद्घाटन कार्यक्रममे बोलैत मन्त्री गौतम ई बात बतैलै।
मन्त्री गौतम कहलै कि समुदायमे भाषा रहल मात्रसे भाषा जिउँदा रहैना। भाषा बोलचाल आ व्यवहारमे प्रयोग नै केल गेल त धीरे–धीरे ओ भाषा हराइत जाइत छै।
उहाँ कहलै, “कतनापय भाषा हमर समुदायमे रहल छै, मुदा ओ भाषा प्रयोगमे नै आनल गेल त भाषा जिवित रहैना। भाषा जिवित राखनाइ कहल हमर सभ्यता, संस्कृति आ पुर्खासभके ज्ञानके आगु बढाबनाइ सेहो हो।”
राज्यके सभ सूचना देशके सभ ठाउँमे रहल नागरिक लग पहुँचाबनाइ जरुरी रहल बताबैत मन्त्री गौतम कहलै कि राज्य आपन दिससे प्रयास करैत आएल छै।
उहाँ कहलै, “नेपालके हरेक कुनाकाप्चामे रहल दिदीबहिनीसभसे राज्यके सभ सूचना अहाँसभ लग पहुँचल छै कि नै भनेर सोधल जाए त कतौ न कतौ सूचना पहुँचमे दूरी देखाइत छै। ई दूरी मेटाबेके जिम्मेवारी राज्य आपन दिससे लैत छै, मुदा ई दूरी मेटाबेके सबसँ पैघ जिम्मेवारी अहाँसभ पत्रकारसभके काँधपर छै।”
मन्त्री गौतम मातृभाषामे पत्रकारिता करैवाला पत्रकारसभके हमसव हेपल वा दबाबमे परल महसुस नै करेके आग्रह केलै। समस्या के कारण खोजैत सभ पक्ष आत्मालोचना करेके सुधारके बाटपर आगु बढनाइ जरुरी रहल उहाँके भनाइ रहल।
उहाँ कहलै, “नेपाली समाजमे सूचनाके पहुँचसे टाढा रहल लोकसभके सूचना देके मूलधारमे आनमे अहाँसभ जे भूमिका खेलैत छी, ओहिके लेल अहाँसभप्रति कृतज्ञता व्यक्त करेके चाही।”
मातृभाषी पत्रकारसभ आपनाके पेलल, हेपल वा दबाबमे रहल महसुस करैत छै त ओ अवस्था ककर कारणसे बनल छै, एकर समीक्षा करेके जरुरी रहल मन्त्री गौतम बतैलै।
उहाँ कहलै, “अहाँसभ पेलल वा हेपल गेल महसुस करैत छी त ई अवस्था ककर कारणसे बनल छै, सभेले आत्मालोचना करैत सुधारके बाटपर आगु बढेके चाही।”
मातृभाषा संरक्षण, सांस्कृतिक अधिकार आ दिगो विकासके क्षेत्रमे मातृभाषी पत्रकारिताके भूमिका महत्वपूर्ण रहल सम्मेलनमे सहभागी वक्तासभ बतैलै।
